Impact of the American Cancer Society

For more than a century, the American Cancer Society has been leading the fight against cancer through groundbreaking research, advocacy, patient support, and prevention efforts. Since 1946, ACS has invested more than $5 billion in cancer research, making it the largest nonprofit funder of cancer research in the United States outside of the federal government. ACS-funded researchers have contributed to many of the most significant advances in cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, and survivorship, helping transform cancer from a diagnosis with limited options into one where more people are living longer, healthier lives.

The impact of this work is measurable. Through research discoveries, prevention initiatives, and improved access to care, ACS has contributed to a 33% decline in the overall U.S. cancer death rate since 1991, helping avert nearly 4.1 million cancer deaths. Today, cancer survival rates continue to improve as advances in immunotherapy, precision medicine, targeted therapies, and early detection provide new hope for patients and their families.

The American Cancer Society’s commitment to scientific excellence is reflected in the 53 researchers it has funded who later went on to receive Nobel Prizes, underscoring the organization’s role in supporting discoveries that have changed the landscape of cancer research and medicine worldwide. Every sponsorship, donation, and partnership helps fuel the next generation of breakthroughs while ensuring patients have access to critical resources, support services, and lifesaving information.
